To push your reading speed, you have to first make sure you can understand what you read. Comprehension must come first.
Comprehension means more than just understanding words and definitions; it means understanding the ideas being communicated.
You also have to be flexible. When you encounter harder or unfamiliar material, you need to automatically slow down and also read shorter word-groups, just as you would switch to a lower gear and cover less distance with each rotation of your bicycle pedal.
The key to a better comprehension is to visualize what you're reading. For me, I like to play a movie in my head, with my imagination, while I'm reading.
