The line between life and death may be blurrier than it seems... A traffic stop turns into a fiasco. An officer admitted to hospital in an absolute emergency. For Major Sharko, Lieutenant Lucie Henebelle and the rest of the team, the rout is total. Violent. But their thirst for justice is stronger than ever. Sidelined until the IGPN decides on his responsibility, Sharko embarks on an investigation outside the law. A dangerous and testing investigation that will leave its mark.
From the depths of an ancestral abbey to the austere corridors of a psychiatric hospital, Sharko comes face to face with madness and discovers that when science ignores ethics, everything can turn upside down.
This book deals with a very dark theme: death. It is omnipresent throughout, and even takes the form of a character. Yet despite this darkness, the author manages to keep us on the edge of our seats with a story that moves at 100 km/h.
The script is very thorough, and the scientific background impressive, making the scenario credible. Because even if it sometimes seems like science fiction, it's not, and the author provides all the references to back up his statements.
Interesting questions are raised, notably in relation to the care of patients who have been declared dead but are still biologically alive, and who can be kept alive by machines. Added to this is the question of the fetus, growing up in the body of a dead mother it will never know. It's all the more chilling when you realize that similar stories have actually been told outside fiction, and it shows just how far technology and science can push the boundaries of ethics.
The author has fun with his characters and spends his time roughing them up, much to the reader's delight. As the characters are confronted with death, it's clear that they are deeply affected by it, and that they can only emerge from it shaken, but strengthened.
In short, this is a thriller you're going to love, which follows on from the author's other books, but which you'll enjoy even if it's the first Franck Thilliez book you've read.
I recommend this book 100%. Very well written, original, believable, chilling scenario, it's perfect.
