FBI agent Malcolm Turner is renowned for his bravery and skill. A master in the art of disguise, he knows how to create a new face, voice and look in a matter of minutes in order to infiltrate any milieu. After the escape of a dangerous bank robber, Malcolm and his partner hide out in front of the home of his ex-girlfriend and alleged accomplice, Sherry. When Sherry seeks refuge at the home of her grandmother, Big Mama, Malcolm doesn't hesitate for a moment to take on the appearance of the old lady in order to gather her testimony.
I mentioned in my review of The Hangover that most comedies suck. This one is no exception. On the other hand, there are a few things to say about it.
Well, let's start with the flaws. There are plenty of them, starting with the hundred or so clichés per minute and the near-zero acting. Add to that the lack of credibility of the script: as if a girl couldn't figure out that an impostor is disguised as her mother. On top of that, the script is woefully lacking in depth, is predictable, and the whole film is summed up in a few lines.
In general, there's no point in watching this kind of film, and I don't finish them. However, this one is still at least enjoyable to watch. In fact, I laughed out loud a few times! Just seeing Martin Lawrence and Paul Giamatti freewheeling is surprising, and makes us a little curious.
The humor is easy, unresearched, the jokes unoriginal and sometimes even crude, yet I found myself laughing all the same for a good part of the film.
In short, this film is ideal for unwinding after a hard day's work. You have to watch it without expecting much.
If I had to give this film an honest rating, it would be 5.5/10. But I'd still recommend it, because despite its many flaws, I had a good time. You just have to hold on to the stupidity of the whole thing.
