Blackfish - 2013

Quick Summary

Tilikum is an aggressive killer whale. In captivity in a water park, he has killed three people. With the support of shocking images, Blackfish brings in specialists who fight to keep these animals in the wild.

My Thoughts

I think we all know that water parks do not treat their animals properly. But seeing it through this documentary film is something else.

It perfectly highlights the cruelty of which we are capable, simply for profit. It is very touching, and small tears can quickly appear on our cheeks.

It is one of those films that make us realize what kind of world we live in. Having already seen whales in the St. Lawrence, I must admit that I can no longer set foot in aquatic parks where they are locked up in prisons barely larger than themselves.

The film is made in the form of a thriller that takes us through the story of Tilikum, from capture to 2013. We obviously feel empathy for the victims of Tilikum, who are not to blame, but we feel empathy for these marine mammals, simply victims of our cruelty.

Of course, to summarize the film would be superfluous. The message it conveys is frightening, on the other hand it may lack objectivity. I would have liked to have the point of view of the "bad guy" (SeaWorld in the film), it is important for a documentary, unfortunately in the film it is indicated that SeaWorld did not wish to participate. There were also controversies related to this film, on the one hand I think that if it makes people react it is a good thing.

In short, this film was very moving and well made.

To Watch or Not to Watch

I encourage everyone to see this film. If only to get the truth about some of the water parks, but on a broader level to get a glimpse of the horrors that humans are capable of, always wanting to be stronger than nature.
