In 1954, Marshal Teddy Daniels and his partner Chuck Aule are sent to investigate Shutter Island, a mental hospital where dangerous criminals are interned. One of the patients, Rachel Solando, has inexplicably disappeared. How did the murderer get out of a cell locked from the outside? The only clue found in the room is a sheet of paper on which one can read a series of numbers and letters without apparent meaning. Is it the coherent work of a sick person, or a cryptogram?
Maybe I should have seen this movie a second time before reviewing it. Indeed, the final twist in this film changes everything, and makes one want to watch this film a second time to see the clues that might have put us on the path. But I'm going to put myself in the case of most people, who will only watch it once.
The main flaw of this film (the only one in fact) is that the first half hour can seem quite long. Not much happens and we don't really take the story seriously.
However, once this part is over, the film becomes really interesting and keeps us in suspense until the end. There is a lot of suspense, and all the characters are very mysterious. The script is superb, accumulating always interesting twists and turns, and the direction is also great.
From a certain point, the final twist becomes predictable, but it's quite late and doesn't bother at all. Besides, the second viewing of the film is meant to detect the clues and details that predict the final twist as soon as possible. Some shots are particularly well done to emphasize these important details for the denouement.
Spoiler alert: what is interesting in this film is that if the scenario initially presents us with characters who have to carry out an investigation to find a missing patient, it is in fact up to the spectator to carry out his own investigation to find the truth. The investigation of the main character is in fact secondary when we think that it is the main plot of the film. A beautiful mise en abyme.
This film is interesting. Of course, if you want to watch it twice it's better, but watching it once is already very interesting and it will please everyone, omitting the first half hour which is a bit long.
