The Big Blue - 1988

Quick Summary

The rivalry between Enzo and Jacques, two childhood friends and now world-renowned free divers, becomes a beautiful and perilous journey into oneself and the unknown.

My Thoughts

A pretty good yarn on all counts. The storyline combining adventure, feelings, travel, and ultimately drama. The bewitching music that became cult. The wonderful photography with a dazzling light. The talented actors. And more...

Well, the scenario may not always be very interesting, but overall it's ok. In fact there are just a few small lengths.

Otherwise, the trio of main actors is perfect. Rosanna Arquette who is perfect and charming in the role of Johanna, the American fan of Jacques. Jean-Marc Barr playing Jacques Mayol, half man half dolphin, always very serene, the quiet force. And finally Jean Reno, imposing in the role of Enzo Molinari.

Some scenes are admirable and bewitching, especially the scenes where Jacques swims with the dolphins. The humor is also present and successful. The relationship between Jacques and Enzo is strong and impacts the viewer, as well as the one between Jacques and Johanna.

In short, this film is very very good, another classic from Mr Besson.

Final Note

This movie is a classic, you have to watch it if it's not done yet. I won't go so far as to say it's a masterpiece, but it's very very good.
