Vertigo - 1958

Quick Summary

An ex-police officer who suffers from an intense fear of heights is hired to prevent an old friend's wife from committing suicide, but all is not as it seems. Hitchcock's haunting, compelling masterpiece is uniquely revelatory about the director's own predilections and hang-ups and is widely considered to be one of his masterworks.

My Thoughts

Seeing this film was the occasion for me to discover this famous Hitchcock, and I confess that I am a little disappointed.

It's great cinema in the realization, that's for sure, between some really well done shots allowing us to put ourselves in the place of the character, or the very well done soundtrack.

The atmosphere is very well done, gloomy and sinister as it should be. Even if some of the visual effects are a bit old, it's still good and watchable.

On the other hand, the scenario is not very credible, and relatively slow. It is still interesting if we omit the romance, which takes different paths and deceives the spectator many times.

The final twist could have been interesting in another context, but here it doesn't work because of the lack of depth, the dialogues, or the slow pace. In fact it looks sloppy, which is a pity for such a movie, it would have made up for it a bit.

The movie is still good, but clearly doesn't deserve either the nominations it received, or to be in a top 100 of the best movies of all time.

To Watch or Not to Watch?

Watch it, simply because it's a classic, but don't expect much from it. You will have understood, this film is overrated, but it remains good.
